Leaf Collection and Composting

LEAF COLLECTION PROGRAM

In addition to providing a disposal service for the residents of Lancaster Township, Leaf collection has several safety related benefits. Leaves pose two major hazards on roadways that include:

    • Wet leaves can be as slick as snow or ice
    • Blocked storm water inlets can lead to flooding of roadways and property

Leaf collection typically begins the second full week in October and continues to mid-December. Before winter weather develops, trucks used for leaf collection must be converted for emergency snow removal.

Collection may not be on the same day every week as in the past. Although the township will strive to pick up leaves every week, township-wide, there will no longer be scheduled pick up days. Leaves will be collected on a rotating basis to ensure all streets are covered. Collection will occur as the road crew makes its way throughout the township. If your leaves are at curbside on Monday, they may not be collected until Thursday or Friday. Leaves may be raked to the curb at any time. Place leaves close to the curb or at the edge of the yard in non-curbed areas. Leaves will be collected as weather, equipment, and leaf volume permits.
Every effort will be made to collect leaves on streets with signed parking restrictions on the days listed. The police will continue to enforce street signs that prohibit parking on certain days. This enables complete leaf pick up and safety for the road crew.

The township will continue to pick up bagged leaves on some of the high-traffic main roads where street cleaning is too dangerous. Please call 293-1733 for pick up. Plastic yard clean-up bags are to be used and bags must be placed at curbside. These streets are:

  • Columbia Avenue
  • East King Street
  • Millersville Pike
  • Millersville Road
  • New Danville Pike
  • Wabank Road

Residents may drop off leaves/woody material from April 1st to November 20th at the composting facility Monday through Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. only. Non-daylight savings hours are 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The facility, located at 1357 Meadowcreek Lane, is also open the first Saturday of the month April 6 through November 2, 9 a.m.to noon.
