Q. Landlord issues: Who can I talk to about problems with my landlord?
A. The township zoning office typically does not get involved in issues between a tenant and a landlord. The tenant should call the PA Consumer Affairs Agency at (800) 441-2555.
However, if a tenant is having trouble with a landlord regarding issues such as water being turned off, or other life and/or safety issues, the tenant should contact the township zoning officer Tom Daniels at (223) 221-7514, or email email@example.com. Residents can contact the township privately with information outlining potential violations of our property maintenance code, building codes or zoning ordinance. All correspondence can be kept confidential if requested.

Do you live in a rental property in Lancaster Township? Approximately one third of the housing in Lancaster Township is comprised of rental units. They range from small to large apartment complexes to individual homes and everything in between. While the great majority of the rental units are clean, safe and in good to excellent condition, there are however, an increasing number in need of repair and even some that are bordering on uninhabitable. Everyone is entitled to safe housing!
Each residence should have the absolute minimum of running hot water, adequate heating, utilities and a working sanitary system. The law requires all to have smoke detectors and in most cases, carbon monoxide detectors placed according to regulation.
In an effort to educate both renters and property owners as to the acceptable standards in the township, we have established this section on our website that is dedicated exclusively to that ideal.
Listed is information and resources that will outline the rights and responsibilities for both parties and how to remedy most issues. All of this is aimed at providing better housing in a cooperative manner between property owners, renters and the township.
Lancaster County is fortunate to have the Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership which has improved the quantity and quality of affordable housing in a meaningful way. Lancaster Township is partnering with them and providing links to their website and the important information there.
