Batteries (Household): Residents may pick up a special battery collection bag at the township office. When the bag is full, place the collection bag on the ground NEXT TO  your trash container, NOT IN IT. The trash hauler will collect the bag(s) during regular trash pick-up. Batteries, can also be taken to the Lancaster County Solid Waste facility at 1299 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA. Call ahead for hours or more information – (717) 397-9968.Automotive batteries must also be taken there.

Bricks, cinder blocks, patio/walkway stones, etc.: These items cannot be put out with regular trash/recycle . If you hired a contractor to do work, you should make arrangements with that contractor to dispose of this material. Or, take directly to the Lancaster County Solid Waste facility at 1299 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA. Call ahead for hours or more information – (717) 397-9968.

Broken Glass (light bulbs, mirrors, windows, etc.): These items are a serious safety hazard to the trash hauler if not disposed of properly. NEVER put loose, broken glass in the trash or recycling.

  • Shattered light bulbs, picture frame glass, vases, drinking glasses, etc. should be placed INSIDE of a heavy paper bag and carefully taped closed. If it is small enough, place the broken glass in a cardboard box, like a cereal or snack bar box, and tape it closed.
  • Large glass such as a mirror or window that is broken or may not be broken should have heavy paper or cardboard over the glass portion, and then carefully taped with duct tape or shipping tape so there are no sharp edges or the potentional for breakage which could cut or seriously injure the trash hauler when picked up. Maximum glass size allowed for disposal is 3 ft. x 6 ft.

Christmas Trees: Artificial trees can be put out with the trash and must have a red extra service tag attached. Real Christmas trees have a special free curbside collection date in January, and special dates for drop off at the woody waste facility. Those dates will be posted on the website and in the winter newslettter. 

 

Covered Devices/Electronic Waste (televisions, computers/accessories, e-readers, cell phones, cameras, and all other electronic devices): These items are prohibited by PA Law to be disposed of iwith regular trash/recycling, and haulers are not allowed to collect them. They must be taken to the Lancaster County Solid Waste facility at 1299 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA. Call ahead for hours or more information – (717) 397-9968.

 

Construction & Demolition Waste: This material cannot be put out for trash/recycle. If you hired a contractor to do work, you should make arrangements with that contractor to dispose of this material. Curbside Yard Waste Collection: There is a special every other week collection schedule for curbside yard waste collection. Collection starts in April and ends in October. Details and dates are posted on the webstie and in the township newsletters.

Drugs & Medical Waste: Drugs/medical waste should be disposed of properly in the trash by mixing in with coffee grounds or kitty litter and placing in a sealed bag or container. Never place medical waste in the recycling bin, and do not flush drugs down the toilet.

  • Dispose of used Sharps/Needles safely and properly by using a Safe Clip™.  They are available for free from the Lancaster County Solid Waste  Authority and at most pharmacies for purchase. DO NOT USE drink cans, plastic food boxes, detergent bottles, or any other hard-plastic container since those containers will burst open when compressed in garbage trucks making workers vulnerable to needle sticks. Used Sharps/Needles are dangerous to people and pets; they can injure and/or spread infections that cause serious health conditions. NEVER place loose needles in your trash, and NEVER in the recycling bin.

Grass Clippings: The township does not accept grass clippings at the woody waste facility, nor is it permitted in the curbside yard waste collection bags. Martin Mulch Products at 55 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, will accept grass clippings FOR A FEE. Call them for hours and more information – (717) 733-1602.

Household Hazardous Waste (adhesives, chemicals, cleansers/polishers automobile products, fertilizers, fire extinguishers, mercury-containing devices, etc.): These and other materials used in the home, garage, and garden are considered household hazardous waste and must be disposed of at the Lancaster County Solid Waste facility at 1299 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA. Large Appliance(s)/White Goods (washers, dryers, dishwashers, refrigerators, stoves, freezers, hot water heaters, air conditioners, furnaces, dehumidifiers, etc.): These items are collected during a special collection once in the spring and once in the fall. Each item requires an extra service tag. Collection dates and other information can be found on the website and in the township newsletters.

Over-sized items (bicycles, microwaves, mattress, couch, small furniture, carpet cut into 5 ft. pieces & bundled, toilet, outdoor grill but NO propane tank): These items are collected on the same day as your regular trash day, limit two per week. Each item must have a red extra service tag securely attached. 

Old Vehicles, RVS, Boats: You can donate cars, trucks, motorcycles, boats, SUVs, RVs, and even boats to the Wheels for Wishes program which benefits your Make-A-Wish®. For more information, visit the Wheels For Wishes website –  www.wheelsforwishes.org or call them directly at 1-877-431-9474. 

Paint & Toxic Product Containers: Paint, rust inhibitors, stains, turpentine, paint thinners, etc. are considered household hazardous waste, and should never be disposed of down any drain.

  • If the container is NOT empty, it needs to be taken to the Lancaster County Solid Waste facility at 1299 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA. Call ahead for hours or more information – (717) 397-9968.
  • Empty containers are not accepted at the LCSW facility. The empty container should be dried out and placed in the trash.

Propane Tanks: Never place propane tanks in recycling or trash. This includes both large and small tanks, such as those used for camping stoves, torches, and other small appliances and tools. Even when empty, they pose a safety risk if they enter recycling trucks or facilities. Take the tank to a local facililty which permits disposal. Tires (Standard vehicle or motorcycle tire ONLY. NO RIMS. NO COMMERCIAL OR OVER-SIZED TIRES): These items are collected during a special collection once in the spring and once in the fall. Each item requires an extra service tag. Collection dates and other information can be found on the website and in the township newsletters.

Woody Waste Drop-off Facility: This facility is open to Lancaster Township residents only during specific dates/times of the year. No commercial landscapers or work-for-hire individuals will be accommodated. Yard waste bags are available when the facility is open. The area is under video surveillance and violators will be cited.
